The Concept
Time-to-power is the interval between an infrastructure decision and the point at which usable, commissioned energy can support the intended workload. It is different from a construction schedule and different from a nameplate capacity target.
How It Works
The measure follows the dependencies that sit between a site and an operating compute system: site control, energy design, equipment, permits, interconnection or on-site generation, commissioning and operational acceptance. A delay in any one of these paths can leave compute capacity waiting for power.
Why It Matters
AI workloads create pressure to bring useful capacity online quickly. Treating time-to-power as a first-class planning metric makes the trade-offs easier to see. A smaller system that can be commissioned in a controlled sequence may be more useful than a larger system whose enabling infrastructure remains uncertain.
Where It Breaks
Time-to-power is not a universal benchmark. It varies with jurisdiction, site conditions, technology, permitting, load profile and the definition of operational readiness. It should be reported with its assumptions rather than used as a promise detached from a delivery plan.
